January Trends

As a millennial, I still have the desire to stay on trend…however my TikTok game is subpar at best, and I still wait for most things to hit Instagram before I catch on. According to sources this trend technically popped off last summer, but I’m bringing to you now, and my excuse is: January is for new beginnings, health, and fitness. While the name has “gym” it has nothing to do with health…or fitness for that fact.

What are Gym Lips?

Gym lips is a trend built on the no “makeup, makeup look” All you need is a lip liner that matches your lip tone and your favourite lip mask to give your lips a juicy and dewy look without that stickiness of gloss.

For this look I selected the La Neige Lip Mask Intense Hydration in Vanilla and paired it with Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk. I also used this for the next trend as well, may as well double up where you can!

Baby It’s Cold Outside,

While the jury may still be out on whether this song is cancelled or a classic (I vote classic). This cold girl makeup trend is popping up all over the place, so I’d thought I’d give it a go. The style is to look like you’ve been kissed by Jack Frost, and while most of us who live up north are all to familiar getting slapped in the face with an -25 wind chill, this is a softer look. Here’s what I used:

  • Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Pillow Talk Lip Liner

  • Charlotte Tilbury’s Rockn’ Kohl Liner in Universa lNude

  • Merit’s Cream Blush in Cheeky

  • Iconic London’ Illuminator

  • Kosas’ Wet Lip Oil

  • Milani’s Mascara (from Ipsy Bag).

Game On!

As we stare at the threat (and reality) of inflation, there has been an increased interest in money talk and financial health. According to the world of Pinterest, the gamifaction on money is on the upward trend…in fact is up by 300%. However, here at thebrokeblonde we have a skeptical eye, and dug a little deeper to find out if this was actually attainable and sustainable. I brought Financial Expert Samantha Gerber in to help with some guidance on a recent blog post — check it out here!

Chasing The Blues Away

I am the first to shy away from colour when it comes to my closet, however after binge-watching Emily In Paris (a couple of times), I have been influenced to add some drama to my wardrobe.

While the Pantone colour of 2023 is technically Viva Magenta, I’ve noticed the colours of 2022 (Very Peri) , 2021 (Illuminating) and 2020 (Classic Blue) are popping up in the shops. …I have my eye on lululemon’s Evergreen Full-Zip Long Jacket (available in Blue or Magenta), They also have puffer jackets available in classic blue and purple, something to fit any colour palette. I also snagged a gorgeous blue coat from Dynamite which is now on sale for $70!

Who said retail therapy can’t chase away the winter blues?

Watch Your Language!

Last year we said goodbye to chic and said hello to the core. Balletcore is one that was popular and while it’s winter there’s no need to neglect a trend, only to adapt it. Here’s what I picked out:

  • Soft Gurls Ear Muffs

  • lululemon Leg Warmers

  • lululemon Define Jacket (Opal White)

  • lululemon Court Rival High Rise Skirt in Strawberry Milkshake

  • Aerie Lumber Jane Waffle Shirt

  • Aerie Cable Lace Longline Bralette

  • and just as a little add on Fresh’s Sugar Recovery Lip Mask

Here are a couple more words that are taking the off-ramp this year according to npr:

Say Goodbye to, GOAT, Amazing, Absolutely, Is What It Is, and Quiet Quitting. Read NPR’s reason for why and more words here, and our thoughts on these particular words here.
